Description
The Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles) is one of the most strikingly beautiful tangs in the marine aquarium hobby, known for its vibrant black body accented by orange and white markings, particularly the signature bright orange patch near the tail. Its stunning appearance makes it a highly sought-after species among expert aquarists. However, due to its demanding care requirements, the Achilles Tang is recommended for advanced hobbyists only.
Native to the shallow reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Achilles Tang is a fast swimmer and requires a large, well-established tank with plenty of open swimming space. It can be quite territorial and aggressive, especially towards other tangs or similarly shaped species, so it is best housed alone or with non-aggressive tankmates in a spacious aquarium. Given its need for a stable environment, frequent water changes and optimal water quality are essential for its long-term health.
As an herbivore, the Achilles Tang primarily grazes on algae in the wild. In the aquarium, it should be provided with a varied diet of marine-based seaweed, algae, and other plant matter, supplemented with high-quality prepared foods to maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
Despite its aggressive nature, the Achilles Tang is reef compatible and will not harm corals or invertebrates, making it an excellent addition to a reef tank, provided its specific care needs are met.
In summary, the Achilles Tang is a beautiful but challenging species that requires a large tank, pristine water conditions, and expert care. Its aggressive temperament and demanding care level make it best suited for experienced aquarists with the knowledge and resources to maintain a stable, large reef system.
