Description
The Annularis Angel Juvenile (Pomacanthus annularis), also known as the Blue Ring Angelfish, is a stunning fish with vivid electric blue and white stripes on a deep black background. As juveniles, these fish display more pronounced patterns that change as they mature into the beautiful adult coloration of blue and yellow with their characteristic “ring” pattern.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species requires a large, mature aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, live rock, and open swimming spaces. Annularis Angels can grow up to 15 inches, so they need a minimum tank size of 180 gallons. They are semi-aggressive and may show territorial behavior, especially toward other angelfish or similarly shaped species. Care should be taken when introducing them into a community tank, and it is important to provide enough space to minimize aggression.
The Annularis Angel is an omnivore and should be offered a varied diet, including marine-based algae, sponges, and meaty foods like shrimp and mysis. This variety helps maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.
While they are not typically reef-safe, some hobbyists have had success keeping them in reef aquariums with caution, particularly in tanks with large, robust corals. However, they are known to nip at soft corals, clam mantles, and invertebrates, so it’s essential to monitor their behavior closely if housed in a reef setup.
In summary, the Annularis Angel Juvenile is a captivating species with striking juvenile coloration that transitions into an equally beautiful adult form. With proper care and space, it can be a rewarding addition to large, well-maintained marine aquariums. Its semi-aggressive nature and diet requirements make it best suited for experienced aquarists.
