Description
The Arrow Head Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is an unusual and distinctive wrasse species characterized by its arrow-shaped head and vibrant coloration. This species displays a range of reds, yellows, and blacks, with prominent black eye spots on its fins, giving it a striking appearance in a marine aquarium. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Arrow Head Wrasse is an active swimmer that explores its environment in search of food.
This species is semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially in smaller tanks. It is best housed with other semi-aggressive or similarly sized tankmates. The Arrow Head Wrasse requires a tank with plenty of live rock for hiding and swimming, and it may occasionally burrow in the sand for protection.
As a carnivore, the Arrow Head Wrasse thrives on a diet of meaty foods, such as shrimp, squid, and other marine-based proteins. It may also prey on smaller invertebrates, so caution is advised if housing it in a reef aquarium.
While it can be kept in a reef tank, it may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates and corals, making it better suited for fish-only tanks or carefully monitored reef systems.
With its unique appearance and active behavior, the Arrow Head Wrasse is a captivating addition to marine aquariums, particularly for experienced aquarists looking for a colorful and dynamic species.
