Description

The Arrowhead Soapfish (Belonoperca chabanaudi) is a captivating species known for its striking coloration, featuring a combination of dark blue to black hues with speckled patterns and a distinct yellow spot near the tail. This unique patterning, coupled with its bold demeanor, makes it a sought-after species for marine aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Arrowhead Soapfish is well adapted to rocky reef environments.

This fish gets its name from the toxin it secretes when threatened, making it unsuitable for tanks with delicate or small tankmates. While it is not aggressive toward larger species, its semi-aggressive nature means it may bully smaller or more passive fish. It is best housed with similarly sized semi-aggressive tankmates in a spacious aquarium with plenty of rock structures for hiding.

The Arrowhead Soapfish is a carnivore and thrives on a diet of meaty foods, including small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans. Due to its carnivorous nature, caution is advised when housing it in a reef aquarium, as it may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish. However, with proper care and feeding, it can be kept in a well-maintained tank with large, sturdy corals.

This species requires a tank of at least 100 gallons to accommodate its active swimming habits and provide enough hiding spaces. The Arrowhead Soapfish is relatively hardy but requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank to thrive.

In summary, the Arrowhead Soapfish is a striking and intriguing addition to large marine aquariums. Its moderate care level and semi-aggressive temperament make it best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide it with a suitable environment and diet. While not entirely reef-safe, it can coexist in a mixed community tank with caution.
