Description
The Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), often referred to as the Caribbean Blue Tang, is a stunning marine fish known for its vibrant blue coloration that deepens with age. Juveniles display a bright yellow color, which transitions to shades of blue and purple as they mature. This tang is a favorite among aquarists for its striking appearance and practical algae-grazing behavior, making it an excellent addition to reef aquariums.
This species requires a large tank (100 gallons or more) with plenty of live rock for grazing and swimming room. They are primarily herbivorous and should be fed a diet rich in marine-based algae, seaweed, and other plant-based foods to maintain their bright coloration and overall health.
The Atlantic Blue Tang is generally reef-safe and can coexist well with other tank inhabitants but may show semi-aggressive behavior, especially toward other tangs or fish of similar shape. Therefore, adequate space is necessary to minimize territorial aggression.
This tang thrives in well-maintained water conditions and is an excellent choice for intermediate to advanced aquarists looking for a vibrant, active fish that contributes to algae control.
