Description
The Banded Longspine Urchin (Diadema savignyi) is a visually striking marine invertebrate known for its long, sharp, black spines adorned with distinctive white and banded markings. These spines are not only for defense but can also cause a painful sting if touched, making careful handling essential. In the aquarium, this urchin is a great algae grazer, helping to control unwanted algae growth on rocks and glass. Its peaceful nature makes it an ideal addition to most reef tanks, but its spines can knock over delicate coral or decorations, so a spacious tank with secure rockwork is recommended. Although it’s a peaceful creature, care should be taken not to house it with aggressive or predatory tank mates. The Banded Longspine Urchin prefers stable water conditions and appreciates live rock for grazing. It is important to note that this urchin may consume more algae than a smaller tank can provide, so occasional supplemental feeding of dried seaweed or algae is recommended.
