Description
The Blotchy Anthias (Odontanthias borbonius), also known as the Borbonius Anthias or Blotched Anthias, is a peaceful and stunningly colored species that adds a splash of bright pink, red, and white to any reef aquarium. Its distinctive blotched appearance, combined with its vibrant colors, makes it highly sought after among marine aquarists. Blotchy Anthias are relatively hardy and best suited for intermediate-level hobbyists due to their moderate care requirements.
In the wild, these Anthias are found in deep reefs, and they prefer a tank with plenty of hiding places and rock formations. Although peaceful, they may become shy or reclusive if housed with more aggressive tankmates. The Blotchy Anthias is reef compatible and safe to keep with corals and invertebrates, making it a perfect addition to any peaceful reef setup.
As a carnivore, this species requires a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings, at least two to three times daily, are recommended to maintain their bright coloration and health. Ideally, they should be housed in a tank of at least 125 gallons, particularly when kept in pairs or small groups, to provide ample space for swimming and socialization.
