Description
The Blotched Foxface (Siganus unimaculatus), also known as the One-spot Foxface, is a vibrant yellow fish distinguished by a unique black blotch near the center of its body and bold black-and-white markings on its face. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this fish is a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists due to its striking appearance and hardy nature.
Blotched Foxfaces are primarily herbivores, feeding on algae and plant matter, making them useful for controlling algae growth in an aquarium. However, they will also accept high-quality herbivore pellets and flakes. While generally peaceful, they can be semi-aggressive if kept in smaller tanks or when competing for territory with similar fish. Their dorsal spines are venomous, so caution should be taken during handling.
While generally reef-compatible, the Blotched Foxface may occasionally nip at soft corals if not well-fed. A minimum tank size of 70 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots among rocks. Their peaceful disposition and utility as algae grazers make them an excellent choice for larger reef or fish-only tanks, adding both functionality and beauty to the marine environment.
