Description
The Blue and Yellow Grouper (Cephalopholis cyanostigma), also known as the Blue-lined Grouper or Yellowfin Grouper, is a striking marine fish recognized for its brilliant blue body accented with vibrant yellow fins and facial markings. This large, robust species is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is a standout addition to large marine aquariums due to its bold coloration and aggressive personality.
While visually stunning, the Blue and Yellow Grouper is known for its territorial nature, particularly toward smaller tank mates. It is best housed in a large, species-only tank or with similarly sized aggressive fish. Due to its carnivorous nature, this grouper preys on smaller fish and crustaceans, so care should be taken when introducing it to a community setup.
This species thrives on a carnivorous diet that includes live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish. Feeding a varied diet will ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Because of its size and active swimming behavior, the Blue and Yellow Grouper requires a tank of at least 180 gallons, with plenty of hiding spaces and live rock formations. While it can be kept in reef tanks with caution, it may pose a threat to smaller invertebrates and fish. With proper care and attention to its dietary and space needs, the Blue and Yellow Grouper can be a magnificent and long-lasting addition to large marine aquariums.
