Description
The Butterfly Ray is an elegant and uniquely shaped ray, known for its broad, wing-like pectoral fins that give it a graceful appearance in the water. This species is best suited for expert aquarists due to its specific care needs, large size, and sensitivity to water conditions. Its peaceful temperament makes it compatible with other large, non-aggressive tank mates in very spacious aquariums.
Native to sandy or muddy bottoms in marine environments, the Butterfly Ray requires a soft substrate to prevent injury to its underside and to allow natural behaviors like burying itself. This carnivorous species thrives on a diet of small marine animals, including shrimp, squid, and other meaty foods, provided regularly to meet its nutritional needs.
This ray is not suitable for reef tanks, as it may disturb corals and small invertebrates while foraging. A minimum tank size of 300 gallons is necessary to accommodate its active swimming and space requirements. The Butterfly Ray offers a captivating presence for those able to meet its advanced care needs, bringing a dynamic and mesmerizing focal point to a large, dedicated marine setup.
