Description
The Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), also known as the Lined Surgeonfish, is a striking species recognized for its vivid blue and yellow horizontal stripes and a streamlined body. The bright coloration and unique pattern make it a standout fish in marine aquariums. However, this species is known for its aggressive temperament, especially toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, making it more suited for experienced aquarists.
Clown Tangs are highly active swimmers, so they require a large tank with plenty of open space, ideally 250 gallons or more. They are herbivores, primarily grazing on algae in the wild, so their diet in captivity should include marine-based seaweed, algae, and vegetable matter.
This species can be a challenge to keep due to its need for pristine water conditions and a well-balanced diet. While they are reef-safe, Clown Tangs need careful monitoring in community tanks due to their territorial behavior. If maintained properly, they are a beautiful and energetic addition to a large, well-established aquarium.
