Description
The Pink/White Coco Worm (Protula bispiralis) is a visually captivating tube worm that features an elegant, double-spiral crown in shades of pink, white, and sometimes red. Unlike other feather dusters, the Coco Worm constructs a calcareous tube, adding a distinctive texture and structure to the aquarium. Its peaceful nature and beautiful coloration make it a desirable addition to reef tanks, but it does require specific care and stable conditions, making it more suitable for experienced aquarists.
Originating from the Indo-Pacific, this species requires moderate to strong water flow to assist with filter feeding, as it relies on capturing fine particulates like phytoplankton and marine snow from the water. Regular supplementation with finely powdered marine foods will help meet its dietary needs. Because of its high sensitivity to water quality changes, a well-established tank with consistent parameters is essential for the Coco Worm’s long-term health.
The Coco Worm’s delicate crown can retract quickly into its tube if it senses threats, adding a unique behavior to observe. Providing a low-stress environment, gentle tankmates, and high water quality will allow this species to thrive, contributing elegance and diversity to a reef aquarium.
