Description
The Collector Urchin is a fascinating addition to marine aquariums, recognized for its spiky, multicolored appearance with shades of brown, orange, and red. Known for its beneficial algae-eating habits, this urchin is a valuable member of reef tank cleanup crews, helping to keep algae growth under control. Its peaceful nature makes it suitable for community tanks with other reef-compatible invertebrates and fish.
Native to various reef environments, the Collector Urchin is known for its habit of picking up small items, like shells and bits of rock, to camouflage itself—an adaptive behavior that adds interest and character to any aquarium. This herbivorous urchin primarily feeds on algae, including nuisance algae, which makes it a practical choice for maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
While the Collector Urchin is relatively hardy, it does best in tanks with stable water parameters and a steady supply of algae. It is important to provide sufficient space for this urchin to move around, as well as moderate water flow. If algae levels are insufficient, supplemental feeding with dried seaweed or algae wafers can be provided.
