Description
The Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus), also known as the Beaked Butterflyfish, is a beautiful and delicate addition to marine aquariums. It features striking vertical orange stripes on a silver body with a distinct black spot on the rear dorsal fin. This species’ elongated snout allows it to reach into crevices for food, giving it a unique appearance and feeding habit. However, the Copperband Butterflyfish is classified as “Expert Only” due to its difficulty in adapting to captivity. It is highly sensitive to changes in water quality and may require live or frozen foods to thrive, as it often has a hard time accepting prepared foods. In the wild, this species primarily feeds on small invertebrates, such as tube worms and crustaceans. In an aquarium, a varied diet including mysis shrimp, clams, and other meaty fare is essential. This species is generally peaceful and can cohabit with other non-aggressive fish but must be monitored in reef aquariums, as it may nip at small invertebrates and corals. Its shy nature makes it best suited for a calm, well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places. The Copperband Butterfly is a highly rewarding species for advanced aquarists who are willing to meet its challenging care requirements. Approximate Purchase Size: 4″ to 6″
