Description
The Copperband Butterfly (Chelmon rostratus), also known as the Beaked Coral Fish, is a delicate and stunning addition to a marine aquarium, recognized by its white body with vertical yellow-orange bands and a distinctive black spot on its dorsal fin. Native to the waters of Australia and the Indo-Pacific, this butterflyfish is highly sought after for its unique appearance and peaceful demeanor.
The Copperband Butterflyfish is best suited for established aquariums with stable water conditions, as it is highly sensitive to changes in water quality and requires specific care. Due to its picky feeding habits, it is classified as an “Expert Only” fish, as it may require live food or specially prepared diets to adapt to captivity. This species primarily feeds on small invertebrates and worms in the wild and may need supplemental feeding with live or frozen meaty foods like mysis shrimp or brine shrimp.
In a reef tank, the Copperband Butterfly is considered “Reef Compatible with Caution,” as it may nip at certain types of corals, especially soft corals and anemones. Additionally, it is known for its effectiveness in controlling aiptasia, a pest anemone species, making it a beneficial choice for reef setups struggling with aiptasia infestations.
This peaceful fish should be housed with other non-aggressive species, as it may be outcompeted for food in the presence of more dominant tank mates. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended, with plenty of rockwork and hiding spots to help it feel secure. The Copperband Butterfly is a challenging yet rewarding addition for experienced aquarists dedicated to meeting its specific care requirements.
