Description
The Deepwater Big Eye is a fascinating fish known for its large, expressive eyes and vivid red-orange coloration, which help it adapt to the low-light environments of its natural deepwater habitat. This species’ large eyes allow it to detect movement and food even in dimly lit conditions, making it a unique and captivating addition to well-established marine aquariums.
As a peaceful fish, the Deepwater Big Eye coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates, but it is best kept with species that won’t outcompete it for food. Though generally hardy, this fish requires stable water conditions and is best suited for intermediate aquarists who can maintain a mature tank environment.
The Deepwater Big Eye is a carnivore, with a diet that primarily consists of meaty foods, such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. It may be hesitant to accept prepared foods initially, so a variety of frozen and live foods may be required to keep it healthy and ensure proper acclimation.
While generally considered reef compatible, the Deepwater Big Eye should be introduced to reef tanks with caution, as it may occasionally nip at small crustaceans or other invertebrates. A tank of at least 70 gallons is recommended to provide ample space and plenty of rockwork for hiding, which will help this nocturnal species feel secure. The Deepwater Big Eye’s vibrant color and calm nature make it an ideal addition to dimly lit aquariums, adding a unique deep-sea aesthetic to the marine setup.
