Description
The Emerald Crab (Mithraculus sculptus) is a popular and beneficial addition to any marine aquarium, especially those that suffer from unwanted algae growth. Known for its striking green color and peaceful nature, the Emerald Crab is a hard-working algae eater that actively consumes nuisance algae, such as bubble algae. This makes it an essential member of any clean-up crew. While generally peaceful, Emerald Crabs may become territorial or aggressive if kept in very small tanks or if they run out of food sources. However, in most cases, they cohabit well with other invertebrates, fish, and corals. They are reef-safe, though they should be provided with plenty of hiding spaces among live rocks to feel secure. As omnivores, Emerald Crabs feed on algae as well as detritus and uneaten food. Supplemental feeding with algae-based foods or seaweed can help ensure their dietary needs are met, especially if natural algae sources are insufficient in the aquarium. For a large-scale setup like a 100-lot purchase, these crabs would be ideal for bigger aquariums or for those looking to stock multiple tanks with effective algae control.
