Description
The Emerald Crab (Mithraculus sculptus) is a popular addition to reef aquariums due to its attractive green coloration and its role as a natural algae controller. Known for its scavenging habits, the Emerald Crab helps keep tanks clean by feeding on various algae, including bubble algae, making it an effective member of the cleanup crew.
While generally peaceful, the Emerald Crab can display semi-aggressive behavior towards other tank inhabitants if food is scarce. It’s recommended to provide plenty of hiding spots and supplemental feeding if natural food sources are low to prevent aggression.
Emerald Crabs are relatively hardy and can adapt to a range of tank conditions, making them a great choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. They are generally reef-safe but should be monitored in tanks with delicate corals, as they may occasionally nip at corals or small invertebrates if underfed.
