Description
The Engineer Goby (Pholidichthys leucotaenia), though often mistaken for a true goby, belongs to a unique family of its own. This species is known for its juvenile form, which displays a striking black body with white horizontal stripes, resembling a Convict Tang. As the fish matures, its coloration changes to a more eel-like body with white vertical bars.
Engineer Gobies are peaceful and thrive in reef setups, but they do have a penchant for digging and can disturb the substrate in search of food. Due to their digging behavior, they may displace rockwork if not carefully secured. Despite their large size, they are not aggressive and do well in a community tank. They typically consume meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and should be housed in a tank with ample rockwork to hide and burrow.
