Description
The Eye Stripe Surgeon (Acanthurus dussumieri), also known as the Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a striking marine species recognized for its vibrant coloration and distinctive markings. Its body is primarily blue, featuring bright yellow and black stripes that make it a standout in any aquarium setting.
Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Eye Stripe Surgeon is often found in shallow waters, where it grazes on algae and other plant matter. This species thrives in well-established aquariums with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots among rocks and corals.
In terms of diet, the Eye Stripe Surgeon is primarily an herbivore, requiring a diet rich in algae and plant materials. High-quality flake foods, algae sheets, and frozen preparations containing spirulina are ideal for maintaining its health and vibrant colors. Regular feeding is essential, as this species tends to graze throughout the day.
While the Eye Stripe Surgeon is generally peaceful, it can exhibit semi-aggressive behavior, particularly towards similar species or during breeding. It is considered reef compatible and can coexist with a variety of tank mates, but caution should be exercised to ensure that all fish are appropriately sized and non-aggressive.
A minimum tank size of 100 gallons is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and to accommodate their social behavior.
