Description
The Flashlight Fish (Anomalops katoptron) is a deep-sea marvel, renowned for its bioluminescent organs located under its eyes. This unique feature emits a gentle glow, used by the fish to navigate dark ocean depths and communicate with other fish. In captivity, the Flashlight Fish’s glowing “lights” create a striking and ethereal effect, especially under low lighting conditions.
Due to its specific environmental needs and sensitivity to changes in water conditions, the Flashlight Fish is recommended only for expert aquarists. It requires a dimly lit tank setup that mimics its natural deep-sea habitat. Plenty of caves and hiding spots are necessary to help this shy fish feel secure. Special attention should be paid to water quality, as this species is sensitive to fluctuations.
Being a carnivore, the Flashlight Fish thrives on a diet of small, meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other tiny crustaceans. It’s best to feed them at night, aligning with their nocturnal habits.
