Description
The Fox Face (Siganus vulpinus), also known as the Foxface Rabbitfish, is a popular choice among marine aquarists for its unique appearance and algae-eating capabilities. This striking fish features a vibrant yellow body, a black facial mask, and white patches near its pectoral fins, giving it a distinctive look. It’s highly valued for its utility in helping control algae in aquariums, as it consumes a variety of algae types, making it a beneficial addition to reef and fish-only tanks alike.
While generally peaceful, the Fox Face can exhibit semi-aggressive behaviors, especially towards fish of similar shape and size. Additionally, it has venomous spines that it uses defensively, so caution is recommended when handling or performing tank maintenance. Though reef-compatible with caution, it may nip at certain types of corals if underfed.
Ideal for tanks of at least 70 gallons, the Fox Face thrives in an environment with ample rockwork for grazing and hiding. Providing a varied diet that includes marine algae, seaweed, and herbivore-specific pellets will help keep it healthy and discourage it from turning to coral for food.
