Description
The Freckled Hawk (Paracirrhites forsteri) is a visually captivating fish known for its distinctive freckle-like spots scattered across its body, typically found in shades of brown and red with contrasting white patches. This hardy species is ideal for beginner and intermediate marine aquarists due to its adaptability and easy care requirements. The Freckled Hawk adds personality to a tank, often perching on rocks or coral while observing its surroundings, a typical behavior of hawkfish.
Although generally peaceful, it can exhibit semi-aggressive behavior, particularly toward smaller, more passive tank mates. Its carnivorous diet includes meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other marine-based fare, making it well-suited for a carnivore-friendly tank setup. While it may coexist with corals, caution is advised in reef environments, as it may prey on smaller invertebrates like shrimp.
A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and perching spots. The Freckled Hawk thrives with plenty of rockwork for hiding and hunting, making it an excellent addition to fish-only or cautiously managed reef aquariums.
