Description
The French Angel (Pomacanthus paru) is a large, strikingly beautiful angelfish that makes a bold statement in any large saltwater aquarium. As juveniles, French Angels display vibrant black bodies adorned with vertical yellow stripes, which fade as they mature into an elegant, slate-colored body accented by golden edges on the scales. Their bold colors and impressive size make them a favorite among marine enthusiasts.
French Angels require a spacious, well-established tank of at least 180 gallons, with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spaces. They are semi-aggressive and can show territorial behavior, especially toward other angelfish or similarly shaped tank mates. They may also nip at corals, sponges, and invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef setups.
This omnivorous species thrives on a varied diet, including marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and spirulina. Regular, balanced feeding supports vibrant colors and overall health. With proper care and attention to water quality, the French Angel can live up to 15 years, becoming a centerpiece in large aquariums.
