Description
The Gorgonia Sea Rod (Gorgonia spp.) is a stunning soft coral known for its graceful, upright branches and delicate, fan-like structure, which adds unique visual movement to reef aquariums. Its coloration typically ranges from purple to tan or yellow, with contrasting white or tan polyps that extend to capture planktonic food from the water column. Due to its specific feeding and environmental needs, the Gorgonia Sea Rod is best suited for experienced aquarists.
Native to the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, this gorgonian thrives in strong water flow and low to moderate lighting, conditions that simulate its natural habitat. Being an azooxanthellate species, it cannot derive nutrients from light, relying entirely on filter feeding. Regular feedings of micro-plankton, phytoplankton, and marine snow are essential to support its health and vibrant appearance.
While it is peaceful and compatible with most reef tank inhabitants, the Gorgonia Sea Rod requires stable water conditions and should be placed where it can receive ample flow without being crowded by neighboring corals.
