Description
The Green Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a unique and distinctive species of wrasse known for its elongated “beak-like” snout, which resembles a bird’s beak. This feature, combined with its vibrant green body and occasional blue or black accents, makes it a striking and active addition to large marine aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Green Bird Wrasse is often seen darting between rocks and coral formations in search of food.
This species is semi-aggressive and should be housed with other robust and semi-aggressive tankmates. It requires a large tank with plenty of swimming space and live rock for hiding and foraging. The Green Bird Wrasse is an active swimmer and will often be seen exploring the entire tank.
As a carnivore, the Green Bird Wrasse thrives on a varied diet of meaty marine foods such as shrimp, squid, and small fish. Due to its active hunting behavior, it is not ideal for reef tanks, as it may prey on smaller invertebrates or disturb delicate corals.
The Green Bird Wrasse is best suited for experienced aquarists with larger, well-maintained tanks. With its fascinating appearance and active behavior, it makes a dynamic addition to fish-only or carefully monitored reef systems.
