The Green Wolf Eel, scientifically known as Gymnothorax funebris, is a striking marine species renowned for its elongated body and unique coloration. Typically, this eel features a greenish-brown hue with lighter spots along its body, giving it a camouflage-like appearance against rocky substrates.
This carnivorous eel is found in rocky reefs and crevices of the Pacific Ocean, where it hunts for crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, fish, and squid, requiring a varied and nutritious feeding regimen to maintain its health.
Due to its semi-aggressive nature, the Green Wolf Eel may exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards smaller fish or other eels. Therefore, it is best housed in a species-specific tank or with larger, robust tankmates that can withstand its assertive temperament.
While not considered reef-safe due to its predatory instincts, this eel can be an intriguing addition to larger aquariums with ample hiding spots and stable water conditions. It appreciates a well-structured environment with caves and crevices, allowing it to feel secure while also displaying its natural behaviors.
