Description

The Harlequin Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides) is a visually stunning fish known for its distinctive large white spots on a dark brown body, making it a popular choice for display in large marine aquariums. As juveniles, they exhibit unique and eye-catching color patterns and swim with a fluttering motion that resembles a dancing behavior. As they mature, however, their coloration and patterns transform, becoming more subdued, and they grow significantly larger, requiring ample tank space.

This species is peaceful as a juvenile but may become semi-aggressive as it reaches adulthood, especially in confined spaces. Although reef-compatible with caution, the Harlequin Sweetlips may prey on small invertebrates and should not be kept with delicate reef organisms. It thrives in a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open areas to accommodate its eventual size.

As a carnivore, the Harlequin Sweetlips requires a diet rich in meaty foods such as crustaceans, squid, and chopped seafood. Due to its size and dietary needs, it is best suited to experienced aquarists who can maintain water quality and provide a varied diet. Regular, frequent feedings are essential to support its growth and health.

With a maximum size reaching up to 28 inches, the Harlequin Sweetlips requires a minimum tank size of 180 gallons to allow ample room for swimming and growth. This species is best suited to large, well-maintained aquariums, making it an impressive choice for dedicated and experienced marine enthusiasts.
