Description
The Hawaiian Squirrelfish (Sargocentron xantherythrum) is a strikingly beautiful species commonly found in the coral reefs of Hawaii. Known for its bright red body with bold white stripes, this fish is an eye-catching addition to any marine aquarium. Its large, dark eyes are adapted for low-light environments, making it more active during the early morning and evening hours.
This peaceful fish is an excellent choice for community aquariums and does well with other non-aggressive tank mates. It is also reef-compatible, posing no threat to corals or invertebrates, which makes it suitable for most reef setups. The Hawaiian Squirrelfish prefers an environment with plenty of rockwork and crevices, providing hiding places that help it feel secure.
As a carnivore, the Hawaiian Squirrelfish requires a diet rich in meaty foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other small crustaceans. It is an active feeder and generally adapts well to prepared foods. Feeding it during its active periods, typically at dawn and dusk, is recommended.
With a maximum size of around 6 inches, the Hawaiian Squirrelfish is well-suited to tanks of at least 50 gallons. Its hardy nature and easy-care requirements make it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced aquarists looking to add a peaceful and visually appealing species to their collection.
