Description
The Encrusted Corky Sea Finger (Briareum asbestinum) is a hardy gorgonian coral that adds an interesting structure and texture to reef aquariums. Known for its branching, finger-like projections and encrusting growth patterns, this coral often displays colors ranging from tan to brown or purple with striking white or tan polyps. Its semi-aggressive nature means it requires adequate spacing from neighboring corals to prevent any chemical or physical interactions.
Native to the shallow waters of the Caribbean, the Encrusted Corky Sea Finger thrives under moderate to high lighting conditions and prefers strong water flow, which helps it filter-feed efficiently. While it benefits from regular feedings of phytoplankton and other small particulate foods, it can also rely on photosynthesis due to the symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues.
With the right conditions, this gorgonian can grow vigorously, adding a lush, branching effect to the tank. However, keeping a close watch on its growth will help maintain balance with other corals in the aquarium.
