Description
The Jack Knife Fish (Equetus lanceolatus), also known as the Highhat, is a unique and elegant fish with a distinctive black-and-white striped body and an elongated dorsal fin that extends like a “knife.” This fish brings a graceful presence to aquariums, especially in setups designed to showcase its flowing fins.
Native to the Western Atlantic, the Jack Knife Fish is peaceful and does well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. While it can be kept in reef tanks, caution is advised, as it may nibble on small invertebrates. As a carnivore, it enjoys a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
With a maximum size of around 10 inches, the Jack Knife Fish requires a tank of at least 100 gallons to accommodate its active swimming habits. Its calm demeanor, unique appearance, and moderate care requirements make it a favorite among aquarists looking to add something different to their marine collection.
