Description
The Jansens Wrasse (Thalassoma jansenii), also known as the Jansen’s Wrasse, is a striking species with a bold color pattern of black, white, and yellow bands, making it a vibrant addition to marine aquariums. This semi-aggressive wrasse is active and inquisitive, often exploring its surroundings, which adds life and movement to any tank setup.
While generally hardy, the Jansens Wrasse may display aggression toward smaller or more timid fish, so it’s best housed with other similarly robust tank mates. Although it is reef-compatible with caution, it may pick at small invertebrates, making it less ideal for tanks with delicate reef inhabitants. A varied carnivorous diet, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood, will help maintain its health and vibrant colors.
Reaching a maximum size of 6 inches, the Jansens Wrasse requires a minimum tank size of 70 gallons with plenty of rockwork for hiding and exploring. Its striking appearance, active nature, and moderate care requirements make it a popular choice for intermediate aquarists.
