Description
The Janss’ Pipefish (Doryrhamphus janssi) is a captivating and uniquely colored species with a slender, orange body accented by a vibrant blue stripe and a distinctively patterned tail. Known for its elegance and gentle nature, this pipefish is ideal for seasoned aquarists who are equipped to meet its specialized care requirements. It is peaceful and does best in quiet tank environments, ideally with other non-aggressive species.
Janss’ Pipefish are carnivorous and feed on tiny crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they thrive on a diet of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, copepods, and mysis shrimp. Due to their feeding needs, they are best kept in a well-established aquarium with a steady supply of copepods or regular feedings of appropriately sized live foods.
Although generally reef-safe, Janss’ Pipefish should be monitored around large or aggressive corals and invertebrates that could harm or outcompete them for food. Providing a tank with plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and calm areas will help them feel secure. This species requires stable water parameters and a peaceful environment, making it suitable for advanced aquarists committed to maintaining a specialized tank setup.
