Description
The Jewel Damselfish (Microspathodon chrysurus), native to Indo-Pacific reefs, is a striking and hardy species adorned with brilliant blue spots across its dark brown to black body, giving it a “jewel-like” appearance. Known for its vibrant coloration and resilient nature, the Jewel Damselfish is a popular choice among aquarists looking for a fish that adds a splash of color to the aquarium.
Although this species is relatively easy to care for, it has a notably aggressive temperament, especially as it matures. It may exhibit territorial behavior, particularly toward other smaller or similarly shaped fish, making it best suited for tanks with robust or similarly tempered tank mates. Due to its assertive nature, it’s advisable to add this fish to the tank after more passive species have established themselves.
As an omnivore, the Jewel Damselfish thrives on a varied diet that includes both meaty foods and algae-based items. In captivity, it can be fed high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp. With proper care, stable water conditions, and an aquarium setup that includes plenty of hiding spaces within live rock, this species can be a vibrant and dynamic addition to a reef or community setup.
