Description
The Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus), also known as the Jeweled Rockskipper Blenny, is an excellent choice for hobbyists looking for an effective algae-eating fish. This blenny has a mottled coloration, blending shades of brown, green, and gray, which helps it camouflage against rocks and other natural features of the tank. Its most distinguishing feature is the small, branching appendages above its eyes, which give it a quirky and unique look.
The Lawnmower Blenny is peaceful and will graze on algae throughout the aquarium, making it a fantastic addition to reef tanks where it can help control algae growth. It’s best suited for tanks with live rock where it can perch, graze, and hide when necessary. Though peaceful, it may exhibit territorial behavior toward other blennies or similar fish, especially in smaller tanks.
Primarily herbivorous, this fish requires a diet rich in algae. In cases where natural algae is insufficient, algae-based flakes or pellets should be supplemented to maintain its health. Additionally, it will benefit from foods such as spirulina and other vegetable-based diets.
Its peaceful nature and algae-eating behavior make the Lawnmower Blenny a reef-safe and desirable fish for a wide range of aquarists. It requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of algae growth to thrive.
