Description

The African Red Fin Lawnmower Blenny is a distinct variant of the Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus), known for its reddish fins and mottled body pattern. It is a peaceful, reef-safe species that is widely favored in the aquarium hobby for its algae-eating habits. The blenny has characteristic appendages above its eyes, often described as “eyelashes,” adding to its quirky appearance.

This fish will spend much of its time perched on rocks, actively grazing on algae, which makes it an excellent choice for controlling unwanted algae in a marine tank. It thrives in well-established aquariums with live rock and algae growth. Though peaceful, it can be territorial toward other blennies or similar species in smaller aquariums.

The African Red Fin Lawnmower Blenny is an herbivore and requires a diet rich in plant-based foods. If there isn’t enough algae in the tank, algae-based flakes, pellets, and other vegetable-based foods should be provided. Spirulina and blanched vegetables like spinach or lettuce can also be given.

This blenny is hardy and relatively easy to care for, making it a great addition to many saltwater tanks, especially for aquarists seeking natural algae control. Its peaceful demeanor, unique appearance, and beneficial algae-grazing behavior make it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.
