Description
The juvenile Majestic Angel (Pomacanthus navarchus), also known as the Blue Girdled Angelfish, is a striking addition to any large aquarium, easily recognized by its bold electric blue body with black stripes and vibrant orange dorsal shading. As juveniles, these fish display their unique blue-black striped pattern, which evolves into more subdued colors as they mature. Their coloration is as mesmerizing as their presence in any reef setting.
Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this species is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards other angelfish. As such, it’s best housed in a large aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding spaces. The Majestic Angel is a relatively hardy fish but requires stable water conditions to thrive. It should be introduced into well-established aquariums with care.
Though it is an omnivore in nature, the Majestic Angel primarily feeds on sponges and tunicates in the wild. In captivity, it should be fed a varied diet of spirulina, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. It is generally reef safe with caution, as it may occasionally nip at soft corals or sessile invertebrates.
