Description

The Mappa Puffer (Arothron mappa), also known as the Map Puffer or Scribbled Puffer, is a large and uniquely patterned pufferfish species originating from the coastal waters of Africa. Known for its intricate markings that resemble a map or network of black lines on a brown and white background, this impressive fish makes a bold and captivating addition to a large fish-only marine aquarium.

The Mappa Puffer is a semi-aggressive species that requires ample space and plenty of hiding spots to feel secure. Its curious and playful personality can make it entertaining to watch, but care should be taken with its tank mates, as it may nip at smaller or more delicate fish. Due to its size and temperament, it is best suited for a tank with other large, semi-aggressive fish in a well-structured environment with sufficient swimming space.

A carnivore by nature, the Mappa Puffer primarily feeds on crustaceans, mollusks, and other meaty foods in the wild. In captivity, its diet should include high-quality marine-origin foods such as shrimp, squid, clams, and other shellfish to help maintain strong teeth and good health. It’s essential to feed it a balanced diet with crunchy foods to wear down its continuously growing teeth.

Due to its large size, a minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended to ensure adequate swimming space and a healthy environment. Mappa Puffers are not reef compatible, as they may consume or damage corals and invertebrates.

With its distinctive appearance and engaging behavior, the Mappa Puffer can become a focal point in a large, fish-only marine tank. Its unique markings and interactive nature make it a favorite among experienced aquarists who can provide the spacious, secure environment it needs to thrive.
