Description
The Marine Betta (Calloplesiops altivelis), also known as the Comet, is a beautiful and mysterious fish, popular in marine aquariums due to its unique color pattern. Its black body is adorned with white spots, creating a starry night effect, and its long, flowing fins add to its elegance. The large spot near its tail mimics an eye, adding to its ability to confuse predators.
The Marine Betta is typically shy and prefers hiding in caves or rockwork. It can be somewhat territorial but generally peaceful if provided with adequate space and hiding places. It may be aggressive toward smaller fish or invertebrates, especially if housed in a small tank.
This species thrives in a tank with plenty of live rock and hiding spots. A carnivorous diet consisting of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish is essential to keep this fish healthy. While it can coexist in a reef environment, caution should be taken, as it may consume small ornamental shrimp and other tiny invertebrates.
Due to its unique appearance and behavior, the Marine Betta makes a striking addition to most marine aquariums, providing both beauty and intrigue.
