Description
The Maxima Clam (Gold) is a stunning and highly sought-after addition to reef aquariums, known for its beautifully patterned mantle with shades of gold, brown, and black. This aquacultured clam is one of the most colorful and popular species among marine hobbyists, making it a prized centerpiece in reef setups. Due to its specific care requirements, it is best suited for experienced aquarists who are comfortable maintaining stable water parameters.
Maxima Clams are photosynthetic and rely heavily on strong lighting, as they host symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within their tissues that provide them with essential nutrients through photosynthesis. Additionally, they are filter feeders and can benefit from periodic supplementation with phytoplankton or similar microfoods, especially in less mature aquariums with low nutrient levels.
In terms of placement, Maxima Clams prefer to be positioned on stable rock surfaces where they can attach themselves. They require intense lighting (ideally from metal halides or high-quality LEDs) and moderate water flow to thrive. Due to their calcium demands, regular monitoring and supplementation of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium are recommended to support shell growth and overall health.
