Description

The Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is one of the most iconic and sought-after marine fish due to its striking coloration and long, trailing dorsal fin. Its elegant black, white, and yellow stripes make it a true showpiece in any aquarium.

However, it is also one of the most challenging species to care for and is recommended only for expert-level aquarists. The Moorish Idol is native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific and requires a large, well-established tank with pristine water conditions and ample swimming space.

This species is peaceful and generally gets along well with other non-aggressive tankmates, but it can be difficult to keep in a reef environment due to its tendency to nip at corals and invertebrates. Therefore, it is considered “reef compatible with caution.”

As an omnivore, the Moorish Idol requires a varied diet of both plant-based foods and meaty items such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Ensuring a balanced diet and maintaining high water quality are essential to keeping this species healthy.
