Description

The Indonesian Sawtail Tang (Acanthurus grammoptilus) is a unique tang species characterized by its muted brown body, yellow tail, and distinctive sharp scales on the caudal peduncle. These “saw-like” scales serve as a defense mechanism and give the fish its name. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this tang is a hardy addition to marine aquariums and exhibits semi-aggressive behavior, particularly towards other tangs or similarly shaped fish.

As a herbivore, the Indonesian Sawtail Tang requires a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, which helps maintain its health and reduces aggression. Its compatibility with reef tanks makes it suitable for aquariums containing corals, as it does not harm invertebrates or coral structures.

With a maximum size of 10 inches, this tang needs a tank of at least 125 gallons, providing ample swimming space. Its peaceful nature with most tank mates and its active, grazing behavior make the Indonesian Sawtail Tang an excellent choice for well-established marine setups.
