Description
The Orange Shoulder Surgeon Tang (Acanthurus olivaceus) is an eye-catching species that starts off bright yellow as a juvenile but develops a more subdued gray and orange coloration as it matures. It is named for the prominent orange stripe that appears along its shoulder, making it a distinctive addition to any large saltwater aquarium.
This tang is relatively peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive fish. Due to its herbivorous diet, it actively grazes on algae, making it an excellent choice for helping to control algae growth in the aquarium. A diet supplemented with marine algae and seaweed will help maintain its health and coloration.
The Orange Shoulder Surgeon Tang requires a spacious tank of at least 180 gallons, as it is an active swimmer that appreciates ample room to move. While generally peaceful, it may show territorial behavior toward other tangs, especially those of similar body shape. However, it adapts well to reef environments and is known for its hardy nature.
