Description
The Panther Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis), also known as the Polka Dot Grouper, is a large, predatory species that stands out for its striking white body covered with black spots. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this fish is a popular choice for large saltwater aquariums due to its distinctive appearance and relatively hardy nature.
As juveniles, Panther Groupers display a more pronounced pattern of black spots and fins with a unique flowing appearance. As they mature, their bodies elongate, and their spot pattern becomes more distributed. They are aggressive carnivores, feeding primarily on smaller fish and invertebrates, making them incompatible with reef setups or smaller tankmates.
This species grows rapidly and can reach up to 27 inches in length, requiring a very large aquarium with ample swimming space and robust filtration. It is recommended for experienced aquarists due to its size, predatory nature, and specific tank requirements. Despite its size and temperament, the Panther Grouper is a fascinating and visually striking addition to large predator tanks.
