Description
The Polynesian Sunset Wrasse (Pseudojuloides atavai), also known as the Atavai Wrasse, captivates with its vibrant sunset hues of orange, red, and yellow that shift beautifully under aquarium lighting. This stunning wrasse originates from the reefs around Polynesia and brings dynamic movement and color to a saltwater aquarium.
Known for its semi-aggressive nature, the Polynesian Sunset Wrasse is best kept in a larger tank with a mix of peaceful and semi-aggressive tank mates. This species may show aggression toward other wrasses, so it is often best to keep only one per tank unless housed in a sufficiently large aquarium. While this wrasse can adapt to a reef setting, it may occasionally nip at smaller invertebrates such as shrimp, making it “reef compatible with caution.”
As a carnivore, the Polynesian Sunset Wrasse thrives on a protein-rich diet of meaty foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other prepared marine foods. Feeding small amounts several times a day helps keep it well-nourished and vibrant.
With its moderate care level, this wrasse is suitable for experienced aquarists who can maintain stable water conditions. Its natural behavior includes burrowing into the sand for sleep or protection, so a tank with a sandy substrate and plenty of rock structures will provide both comfort and ample hiding spaces.
Overall, the Polynesian Sunset Wrasse is a brilliant and active fish that can add stunning color and movement to a medium-to-large saltwater aquarium, with a bit of extra care to ensure compatibility in a reef setting.
