The Purple Tile Fish (Hoplolatilus purpureus), also known as the Purple Goby or Purple Dartfish, is a captivating addition to saltwater aquariums due to its vivid purple coloration and sleek, elongated body. This peaceful and hardy fish is ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists, and its unique appearance provides a beautiful contrast among corals and live rock.

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Purple Tile Fish prefers to stay near sandy or rocky areas within the aquarium, where it can dig burrows for security. While it is generally peaceful, it can be timid, especially if housed with larger or aggressive tankmates, so it is best suited for a community tank with other non-aggressive species.

As a carnivore, the Purple Tile Fish thrives on a diet of meaty foods, including finely chopped shrimp, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other high-quality frozen foods designed for carnivores. Feeding it small portions multiple times a day will keep it healthy and support its vibrant colors.

With a maximum size of 4″, the Purple Tile Fish requires a minimum tank size of 20 gallons. This tank size provides ample swimming space and allows it to establish a secure territory. To create an ideal habitat, include plenty of hiding places with rock formations and caves, which will make this goby feel safe and reduce stress.

The Purple Tile Fish is also reef-safe, making it a suitable choice for reef aquariums, as it will not disturb corals or invertebrates. Its striking purple hue and gentle nature make it a standout addition to any well-maintained saltwater aquarium.
