Description
The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum), also known as the Yellowtail Tang or Yellowtail Surgeonfish, is a beautiful and popular addition to large saltwater aquariums. Originating from the reefs of the Red Sea, this striking fish features a vibrant purple body accented by a bright yellow tail, creating a dramatic display that is highly sought after by marine hobbyists.
This tang is semi-aggressive, particularly toward other tangs or fish with similar body shapes, so it’s best introduced as the last fish in a community tank to minimize territorial disputes. It is generally peaceful with other species and compatible in reef settings, as it will not harm corals or invertebrates.
The Purple Tang is a herbivore and should be fed a diet rich in algae-based foods to support its health and coloration. Offer it dried seaweed, spirulina, and high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets, supplemented with fresh vegetables like zucchini or spinach. This diet helps prevent common tang health issues and promotes longevity.
With a maximum size of 10″, the Purple Tang requires a minimum tank size of 125 gallons to accommodate its active swimming behavior and grazing needs. Live rock with ample algae growth will keep it entertained and well-fed while adding a natural grazing area to the aquarium.
Due to its moderate care requirements, the Purple Tang is ideal for experienced aquarists who can provide stable water conditions and a spacious environment. Its stunning colors and dynamic personality make it a highly prized fish that adds vibrancy to any large reef or fish-only system.
