Description
The Purple Whip (Pseudopterogorgia spp.) is an elegant and captivating soft coral featuring slender, purple branches adorned with white or yellow polyps. Its graceful appearance adds a unique, naturalistic touch to established reef aquariums. Due to its specific care needs, the Purple Whip is best suited for expert aquarists with experience in maintaining delicate filter-feeding species.
Found in the deeper waters of the Caribbean, this gorgonian coral prefers low to moderate lighting and high water flow to mimic its natural environment. It is an azooxanthellate species, meaning it does not rely on photosynthesis and instead requires regular feedings of phytoplankton, marine snow, or other finely-sized planktonic foods to sustain its health and vibrant coloration.
With its peaceful disposition, the Purple Whip can coexist with a variety of tankmates in a reef setup. However, maintaining optimal water quality and consistent feedings is essential for its long-term survival.
