Description
The Rainbow Basslet (Liopropoma fasciatum), also known as the Swissguard Basslet or Candy Basslet, is a breathtakingly colorful fish that displays a mix of red, yellow, blue, and purple hues. This species is highly prized by marine aquarists due to its striking colors and unique patterns, making it a valuable centerpiece in a well-maintained reef or community tank.
Native to the Caribbean, the Rainbow Basslet is known for its semi-aggressive behavior, especially towards other small, similar-looking species. It is best housed with other peaceful or slightly more robust species in tanks that offer multiple hiding spots. This basslet prefers to stay close to rock crevices and will often dart into hiding if it feels threatened.
A carnivore, the Rainbow Basslet thrives on a diet of meaty foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specially formulated frozen carnivore foods. Feeding it two to three small meals per day will help maintain its vibrant coloration and overall health.
Reaching a maximum size of 3″, the Rainbow Basslet requires a minimum tank size of 30 gallons. A well-decorated tank with plenty of rockwork and caves will provide the hiding places this basslet needs to feel secure and display its natural behavior.
Reef-compatible, the Rainbow Basslet is safe with corals and most invertebrates, making it a fantastic choice for reef aquariums. Its dynamic coloration and reclusive yet inquisitive nature make it a showstopper that adds intrigue and beauty to any aquarium setting.
