Description

The Razor Wrasse (Xyrichtys spp.) is an active and curious fish known for its sleek, elongated body and sharp, vibrant coloration. With a mix of green, blue, and yellow hues, the Razor Wrasse adds a dynamic splash of color to the aquarium. Its streamlined body allows it to swiftly dart in and out of rockwork and sandbeds, making it a lively addition for experienced aquarists.

Originating from the Indo-Pacific, this semi-aggressive wrasse does best in aquariums with ample open swimming space and rockwork. It has a habit of diving into sandy substrates to rest or escape from perceived threats, so a substrate depth of 2-3 inches is recommended. A secure lid is also essential, as this species is prone to jumping.

As a carnivore, the Razor Wrasse enjoys a varied diet of meaty foods, such as mysis and brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen carnivore foods. Feeding twice daily helps maintain its energy and natural vibrancy.

Though it is generally safe with corals, the Razor Wrasse should be added to reef tanks with caution, as it may pick at small invertebrates. This behavior can make it incompatible with certain reef setups that include small ornamental crustaceans.

With a maximum size of 5″, the Razor Wrasse requires a minimum tank size of 50 gallons. Its active swimming habits and tendency to roam make it well-suited to larger tanks with similarly sized tankmates. Semi-aggressive, it should ideally be housed with other moderately tempered fish to prevent bullying or stress.
